Where is an ordinary knife more valuable than a rifle? Where snow beasts and magic are real. In the Borderlands…
Welcome back to the Borderlands, a ruthless world of frost, brutal magic, and creatures both human and inhuman. In his book The Ice Citadel, author Pavel Kornev once again proves that in a proper action story, the heroes get no special treatment, the word 'trust' is automatically a fifty-fifty deal, and any day could be your last – so you'd better shoot your way through to at least the afternoon before someone gets to you first.
Imagine you want to go to your favourite pub, only to find a pyramid has landed on it. And a portal has opened up, from which ice monsters and magic of such concentration pour out that it will sear your brain. Step right up. Yevgeny Maksimovich Apostol is expecting you, you see, because he can see a little way into the future. He fell into the Borderlands several years ago and now deals in all sorts of things. But certainly not the kind of things that would cause his door to be blown to bits one day by someone trying to kill him. And from then on, it doesn't get any better. What's it all about? Maybe it's about deals with silver, which is more valuable than gold in the Borderlands, but maybe it's something bigger.
Someone is distributing 'besovets', a strange drug, across the Borderlands. Under its influence, you can be shot full of holes like a sieve or have a bullet put through your head, and you'll still keep going. And as we know from the author, the tough guy Pavel Kornev, he won't go easy on you and will pump you full of a hefty dose.
He has placed an excellent weapon in Apostol's hand: clairvoyance, which is something of a double-edged sword. Yevgeny sees events in advance, but at the same time, he experiences everything he does to others – both pain and death. So, if he has to take someone out, his most pleasant victims are zombies, because they no longer feel anything.
