The restriction and suppression of free life under the previous regime also significantly affected the life of Christian churches. Therefore, the commemoration of the Lord's Supper often had to be celebrated secretly and in cramped conditions. Paradoxically, this only served to highlight the depth of this most precious legacy from Jesus. The liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council was also intended to help bring the mystery of the Last Supper closer. Its purpose was to build on the legacy of the early Church and on the natural and legitimate development within its thousand-year tradition. Today, this means learning to live in the spirit of the renewed liturgy, bringing it to life step by step and understanding it as an ever-living sign of salvation within individual Christian communities.
