Justina or the Curse of Virtue
In depicting perversions, the unrivalled author...
De Sade wrote a literature that is hard to give a name to. Some called him a pornographer.
Erotic literature or a philosophical treatise? A sophisticated literary aphrodisiac, or a condemnation of society by depicting the debauchery of nobles, monks, bourgeoisie or representatives of the judiciary? Justina can also be read as a revolt of man against all unfreedom and oppression in the form of rejection of moral conventions, God and society. The author's thorough description of all forms of eroticism, even the perverse and violent, serves the author's search for a complete and true picture of the human psyche. With his reflections, anticipating in many ways the teachings of Sigmund Freud, de Sade opens the way for modern psychopathology.
