Somewhere at the “end of the world,” in a small Patagonian village called Kruguer, nestled in a magical mountain landscape, inexplicable things begin to happen… On the 27th of June 1987, the village is seized by a “spirit of mass madness,” and of the hundred or so inhabitants, only a handful survive. On that day, the freshly fallen snow turns red with blood, and the entire village is reduced to ashes. Severed heads, spilled guts, and pieces of human bodies lie scattered in the snow, the silent remains of a horrific massacre… Commissioner Dut arrives from a neighbouring town to investigate the whole affair. He questions witnesses and direct participants, only to find himself face to face with something inexplicable. Mystery piles upon mystery, and everyone unanimously claims: “Everyone was killing. If you didn’t kill, you were killed.”
The story is told from the perspective of multiple narrators and is interspersed with short excerpts from the popular telenovela ‘Untamed’ and a passage from the essay ‘Civilisation or Barbarism’. Will Dut manage to solve the most baffling case of his investigative career? And what will become of the depopulated settlement of Kruguer, now transformed into a cursed “place of shadows”?
