Based on true events, this novel captivatingly portrays the fate of Lída Baarová's cousin, the entire Babka family, and their villa. As children, Evelína, Zorka, and Lída wrote down tasks, believing that if they completed them all, they would succeed in life. The post-war years in Czechoslovakia, however, present them with new challenges. Lída is accused of collaboration, and Zorka cannot cope with the hatred. Evelína tries to hold her family and her own values together, all while unwittingly becoming involved with a secret service agent. As mould spreads through the modern villa in Hanspaulka and its walls gradually crumble, so too do the values of the people around them. The house becomes a symbol of the decline of a family that once enjoyed the admiration of all of Prague.
