The news of a dead body spotted in the house of a former judge is a godsend for the famous detective, who, to his immense disappointment, has been appointed chief commissioner of the provincial town of Luçon. So he immediately sets off for the coastal village of Aiguil, inhabited mainly by fishermen and mussel farmers, to launch an investigation in the surprisingly opulent surroundings of the Forlacroix family villa, with the aim of discovering the identity of the murderer and his victim. Will he be able to penetrate the closed community, uncover its long-buried secrets and unravel the strange relationship between the old judge, his hot-blooded son Albert and his nymphomaniac daughter Lisa?
In a masterfully constructed story with a suitably oppressive atmosphere, Commissioner Maigret once again gets the opportunity to demonstrate his knowledge of the darkest corners of the human mind and his ability to look deep beneath the surface of events.
