Mandel sonnets
The new edition of Mandela's sonnets, which you are holding in your hands right now, is a small but eloquent imprint of the breadth of artistic scope that Miloň Čepelka enjoys. Without wishing to compare him to a great man, that he helped discover, with "volcano, that has buried itself." we must bow to the variety of forms, with which he expresses his never-ending fascination with the world around him. Actor, playwright, Screenwriter, lyricist, singer, both novelist and poet have chosen the form here, which (together with haiku) is probably the closest to him today. His sonnets captivate with their successful marriage of poetry and civility, by forgotten words, which, in the spirit of the motto cum grano salis, subtly flavours the modern language of his poems, and intimate experience, cursed in perfect form, ...thus giving memory to the greatest poet of them all, Ivan Blatny. Unlike him, however, he rejoices that he has found a woman who shares his love and respect for the past, and so his verses sound mainly a love note. It is a confession, a tribute to beauty in its various forms, a poetry understandable to everyone, for the poet is convinced that "old forms in times of confusion maintain order". A gift suitable for a lady's handbag amongst lipsticks and powder puffs and combs and scattered small coins. And in the library anywhere, perhaps in front of the spines of big books, which his small, gentle size cannot cover, and therefore will not be jealous of him.
