Maribor hypnosis

The book was the Magnesia Litera Book of the Year 2025 and also won in the Prose category. Dora Kaprálová is coming to Maribor, Slovenia, for a 14-day creative stay. Its birth is permeated by day dreaming and the author's talent for capturing the unrepeatable and ephemeral wonders of everyday life. The free-flowing story gradually links the fateful love of the hypnotist Svengali and his girlfriend, whose colourful fates involve not only Rasputin but also playwright Frank Wedekind and dictator Tito. Maribor figures appear in the branches: Jim the guitarist, an old street puppeteer, Jan from the Museum for One, or the eighty-year-old Mrs. Dasha, a gracious hostess who believes in the saving role of Russia.
