Masters of the Word - Madame Bovary

The story of an unhappy married woman who defies the ordinariness and boredom of her life

Madame Bovary is a realistic novel from 1857 and is the author's first work. Flaubert's inspiration for the book came from a mention in a newspaper of the time about a country doctor's wife who had poisoned herself and whose death was preceded by marital drama. The protagonist of the novel is Emma Bovary, who marries a country doctor, and enters into the marriage with a lot of ideals, which she has picked up mainly from reading romantic books. Over time, she discovers that her romantic notions are very far from real life. Emma manages to find the passion and love she dreamed of in the arms of her lovers, but her enjoyment of her lover's love is short-lived and results in a tragic outcome.

Gustave Flaubert

Flaubert was born in Rouen, France, into a family of doctors. After his studies at the lyceum, he continued his studies in law, which he had to discontinue for health reasons. Flaubert, who rejected the institution of marriage as a bourgeois relic and whose lifelong - but platonic - love was a woman 11 years his senior, devoted his life to literature and travel. He travelled through France, Italy, Greece, the Middle East and settled briefly in Tunisia. For his novel Madame Bovary, he was tried for insulting public morals and the institution of marriage. At trial, however, he persuaded the jury that his novel only referred to immorality and did not support it in any way, and he won the case.
