Munich, Death and Goodbye

3 fantastic short stories by David Shenk from the anthologies In the Shadow of the Empire, In the Shadow of the Apocalypse and In the Shadow of Magic.

Smoke over Munich: Milan Kadlec is a butcher. He falls head over heels in love with Sara Brux. It wouldn't be anything special, but Sarah is a German Jew and has paranormal powers. The year is 1928 and a young couple set up a butchery business in Munich. But Germany is changing and our heroes soon find themselves in a whirlwind of events over which they have no control.

The colour of death: A comet hits the Earth with the spores of a wood-boring fungus in its core and the world as we know it ceases to exist. Forests are dying, ocean levels are rising. Sam Taylor goes on a journey to find the girl he saw in his dream. She may know how to stop the destruction and help trees to grow again on Earth in the future. Or is everything completely different?

The longest goodbye: The evacuation is coming to an end, the humans are leaving an alien planet whose sun is about to go supernova. Kalamon Daaz decides to find the planet's original inhabitants - the mysterious Fomwe race - and warn them of the impending danger. Will his mission be successful? Will he be able to find Fomwe and make a deal with them?
