It's rare for the average person to realise just how important the "bowels of our cities" are. That is, until they stop working. And that's never associated with pleasant feelings, let alone aesthetic ones.

The complexity, elegance and – let's not be afraid to say it – beauty of the whole system is usually only revealed to those who are involved in its construction and maintenance.

This book is exceptional in that it uncovers a part of this hidden world. It was created at the initiative of several companies that rightly wanted to show off something extraordinary, in which each of them played its part. It is undeniable that its creators are engineers, who have also shown themselves to be distinctive artists here.

Every living city is a pulsating organism, through which the necessary nutrients and waste products of its metabolism constantly flow. This flow is invisible to the average city dweller, hidden beneath ground level. The task of the people who look after these systems is to solve all operational problems and, even better, to prevent them and improve the relevant processes.

This book deals with one smaller but rather significant part of the sewer system that addresses how to overcome a large drop in wastewater drainage. It presents a unique construction project in Prague's Libeň district. In addition to a new sewer nearly 250 metres long, it also includes a drop shaft (drop structure) almost 30 metres deep. It differs from other similar structures in its original use of a helical bypass for sewage water.

The book is also a thank you to the authors of the construction and to all the others who were involved in the creation of the work.
