Baron William de Hornet, who is sent with his men to suppress a peasant revolt in 1381, finds himself in the small village of Brompton, which has been plagued by strange mists that bring evil things for some time. Voices. Strange creatures. And death. The source of these strange phenomena seems to be an area that locals call the Dead Gardens. William, against his will, must confront their spirits.

But even then he has no peace - his wife begins to wither and die of a mysterious illness. To cure her, he must travel to a mysterious island that is said to be cursed. Here he faces his worst nightmares - and also learns the terrifying truth about his wife' s past.

William gradually accepts his curse - which can also be a gift. He becomes a renowned warrior with supernatural powers, whom King Richard II of England befriends. assigns the strangest tasks.
