Plantains

No human life is ordinary when viewed up close.

Pavlína grows up in a household where everyone means well, and yet everyone argues every day. My father can't stand my mother's cries, she sees him as a drunkard, my grandparents know best, my sister has her own world. She spends her first years in primary school still under the supervision of a comrade teacher parroting communist propaganda, looking with fear at the rain that may contain radioactive fallout from Chernobyl, and is awakened from her sleep by terrifying images of World War III unleashed by the imperialists.

However, even a revolution will not bring the expected change to the lives of a complex teenager and her perpetually dissatisfied parents - people are still the same, money is the only measure of success, and the scissors between the more capable citizens (or those who have a better starting position) and the rest of the nation are mercilessly opening. Pavlína would also like to grab a piece of happiness for herself, but she still doesn't know how. And the relationships within her family are getting worse and more twisted every day...

They wrote about the book Plantains

"Seen from the outside, thematically perhaps the least striking, but certainly one of the most impressive books by this successful author. The main 'dramatic substance' here is life itself and its transformations. Those imposed by fate and those painfully and gropingly found."

Martin Stöhr, Editor

"I belong to a generation that was on the verge of puberty at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. I think it was an unrepeatable time, and in Pláňaty I explored how it touched the lives of an ordinary family. I was interested in how not only the main character Pavlína, but also her parents and loved ones entered the new times, which brought them great expectations, but also caused a hard blow and deprived them of many illusions. Above all, that an external change can solve their personal problems and remove their mutual disagreements. And while the family is drowning in their everyday, seemingly banal worries, Pavlína is diligently looking for a way out."

Petra Dvořáková, author of Pláňat

Excerpt from the book

"Everything has changed, only the conditions have not. Or maybe they are, but ours are just for the worse. We had nothing and we got a fart again. Then everyone had a mouthful of freedom. They just forgot to tell us that there is no freedom without money anyway."
