The old gang is back and they're set to conquer the porn industry!
Surely you didn't think this lot had finally seen sense after ten years? Edinburgh might have changed, but the heroes of Trainspotting are still the same at heart. Simon, a.k.a. Sick Boy, returns to Leith from London to turn his late aunt's grimy pub into a renowned establishment. He plans to make money by shooting a porn film, in which he wants to cast Nikki – a sharp and sexy university student with acting ambitions who is up for anything. But when Renton enters the scene with his capital, and a vengeful Begbie storms out of prison, the original plan starts to morph into a chaotic massacre. What chance does Spud's attempt to kick his long-term drug addiction have in such conditions? Beneath the layers of profanity, cynicism, sex, and of course, plenty of booze and other substances, lies a story about ageing, missed opportunities, and the fact that you can't escape your past.
The standalone sequel to the cult novel Trainspotting, also known for the film of the same name. Its director, Danny Boyle, also adapted Porno in 2017 with Ewan McGregor and the other original actors, released under the title T2 Trainspotting.
"However, according to Vít Malota, the audiobook's director, the film contains about five percent of Porno and just jumped on a wave of nostalgia. But if there's one thing the novel Porno isn't, it's nostalgic. It unfairly lives in the shadow of Trainspotting."
Audiobook narrator Kryštof Bartoš adds: "It's a completely unique ride, with the same characters but in a totally different life." – naposlech.cz
"Welsh is a master at making us sympathise with characters we would deeply despise in real life. Porno is brutally funny, filthy, and surprisingly clever in its commentary on the commercialisation of human desire." – The Guardian
"The return of Renton, Sick Boy, and Begbie is like meeting up with childhood friends who have become first-rate wrecks. Welsh's style is as kinetic and vulgar as ever, but underneath it all bubbles a melancholy of ageing and missed opportunities." – The New York Times
"Few authors can capture the voice of the street so authentically. In Porno, Welsh proves he has lost none of his ability to shock, while also moving his characters into a new, equally rotten, but all the more fascinating stage of life." – The Independent
"A proper ride, just as Welsh does it. The authenticity hasn't faded, the characters are still believably unsympathetic to the point of being disgusting. Scams, violence, coke, porn, birds, booze. Friendship and sincerity are in short supply." – from reader reviews on Databazeknih.cz
Even as I'm racking this up my nose, I realise a sad truth. Coke bores me, it bores us all. We're worn-out losers in a society we loathe, in a city we hate. We pretend we're the centre of the universe, wrecking ourselves with shoddy drugs just to banish the feeling that real life is happening somewhere else; we realise our actions only feed the paranoia and disillusionment, and yet some kind of apathy stops us from quitting. It's sad, but there's nothing more interesting around, so why would we stop. – excerpt from the book
