There are moments a sports fan will remember on their deathbed, so to speak. When it comes to ice hockey, the triumph at the 1985 World Championship in Prague is undoubtedly one of them.
Back then, the Soviet Sbornaya team was the undisputed hegemon. Canada and the USA also brought exceptionally strong squads, packed with players who would later become legends. Nevertheless, the Czechs and Slovaks expected nothing less than the best from their own national team…
… and the team did not disappoint! The second match against the Soviet Union, which “our boys” won 2:1, is indelibly etched in memory. As is the unofficial final after a barrage against the Americans, in which Jiří Šejba put the puck into the Canadian net three times.
This very hero of the championship is one of the personalities interviewed by Tomáš Procházka, a journalist and former hockey player. Other outstanding forwards from both parts of the then-federation, Pavel Richter and team captain Dárius Rusnák, also reminisced with him about the Prague gold. The defence is represented by one of the discoveries of the championship, Antonín Stavjaňa. Behind him and his fellow defencemen, the legendary Jiří Králík worked his magic, rightfully named the best goaltender of the tournament.
To make up a symbolic hockey six, the lineup is completed by the equally renowned radio reporter and Hall of Fame member Aleš Procházka, the author's father. Thanks to this, the book also includes very personal memories from both father and son of those unforgettable spring days in 1985.
The title Praha 1985 – Zlato z domácího šampionátu (Prague 1985 – Gold from the home championship) follows on from Tomáš Procházka's successful book Nagano 1998 aneb Turnaj století očima šampionů (Nagano 1998 or the Tournament of the Century through the eyes of champions) and is being published on the occasion of this year's IIHF World Championship, which is once again being held in Prague.
