The monograph, Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Case Studies, focuses on the treatment of respiratory disorders of various aetiologies from the perspective of physiotherapy, which is of key importance for patients in the interdisciplinary treatment of breathing difficulties. The reader will learn what pulmonary rehabilitation should include, which techniques can be used for the treatment of respiratory disorders, what important examinations are necessary before starting pulmonary rehabilitation, and will also become familiar with the breathing aids and devices used during pulmonary rehabilitation. The introductory chapter summarises the basic terminology of pulmonary rehabilitation, its content, examinations before it begins, and the definition of pulmonary rehabilitation techniques. In the special section, the book uses case studies to increase its didactic value. Within the context of a specific diagnosis, it describes what respiratory disorders may be encountered, and an individualised pulmonary rehabilitation procedure is presented, determined by the patient's difficulties and based on the results of the examinations performed. Both adult and child patients are included.
The book covers the most significant diagnoses: COPD, asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, pleurisy, rib fracture, sarcoidosis, diaphragmatic paresis, gastro-oesophageal reflux, spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, ankylosing spondylitis, functional breathing disorders, and obstructive sleep apnoea.
There is currently no similar book available on the market. The advantage of the book is the truly broad spectrum of diagnoses where respiratory disorders can occur, and the individualised approach to pulmonary rehabilitation with a rationale for why the given techniques were chosen.
The book is not only a study material for postgraduate studies, but is also beneficial for daily clinical practice.
The main author, Assoc. Prof. Mgr. Kateřina Raisová, Ph.D., works at the Department of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacký University Olomouc, and has been involved in pulmonary rehabilitation for more than twenty years.
