Shadow

The rediscovered novel The Shadow by the screenwriter of It Is Necessary to Kill Sekal

The first and last prose work by screenwriter Jiří Křižan (1941-2010). The story of an orphaned country boy brought up by an almost old-worldly righteous grandfather, interspersed with "stupid" stories from his military service in the Auxiliary Technical Battalions (PTP). An extremely evocative narrative that gives an almost physical sense of what it is like to grow up on the margins of society - as a "class enemy" branded by political arbitrariness, and therefore a worthless, "former human being".

Křižan wrote this narrative with strongly autobiographical elements when he was 27 years old, but he did not live to see it published in his native language: At the beginning of the 1970s, the columnar proofreading was swept away by the normalisation purges and in the ferment of the end of the millennium all efforts to make it accessible to readers came to nothing.

Now the Shadow is finally seeing the light of day. This was not done simply out of an obligation to repay a debt to literary history, nor in an attempt to monetise an unknown work by a well-known author, but because it is an extraordinary text that has lost none of its relevance and impact in half a century.

They wrote about the book Shadow

"The Shadow" is a work that is not only a contemporary documentary, but also a strong and - since it is a debut - surprisingly stylistically mature text. "

Jiří Křižan

One of the most distinctive Czech film writers of the second half of the 20th century. His whole life was marked by the post-war building of communism: In 1951, his father was sentenced to death for treason and the murder of a border guard in a trumped-up political trial. Later, Jiří Křižan was expelled from the grammar school for political reasons. He completed his military service in the units that replaced the Auxiliary Technical Battalions in the second half of the 1950s and then went on to several blue-collar jobs. In 1964 he was admitted to FAMU in Prague. In January 1989 he was at the origin of the petition committee for the release of the imprisoned Václav Havel. Later, together with him, Alexander Vondra and Stanislav Devátý, he initiated the creation of the petition Several Sentences and in November 1989 he was one of the founding members of the Civic Forum. He became an advisor to President Václav Havel and in 1995 returned to writing film scripts and began lecturing at FAMU. Two years later he took over the management of the family farm, returned in restitution.
