A young art student arrives on a remote island in northern Sweden. He is to spend a few months with a prominent sculptor whose work he admires, working on his final thesis. His presence, however, disrupts the carefully constructed order of silence and solitude in which the artist, many years her senior, has lived and in which she has hidden herself from the world. At first, there is distance and distrust between the two protagonists, but gradually, in an isolated space with beautiful nature, their past, their wounds and their longings, which they have both kept silent for a long time, begin to be revealed.
Summer on the island turns into a fragile and ambiguous encounter between two lonely people who are both disturbed and attracted to each other. Antonio brings with him a story of unhappy love and vulnerability, while the narrator unexpectedly discovers in his presence forgotten emotions, inspiration and the pain she once fled. Everyday small rituals - coffee together, quiet evenings by the sea or walks in the countryside - gradually reveal the deeper layers of their relationship and the question of whether it is possible to start again, even though one has long believed that everything essential has ended.
Sing to the Birch is a lyrical story of contrasts. Youth and old age, naivety and cynicism, too much effort and too much passivity. But above all, it is a story of hope and the healing power of nature, of an encounter that can change the way we look at the past and the future.
