Just as during the execution of 27 Czech lords, a scaffold covered with black cloth stands in the Old Town Square on 11 February 1633. The same executioner, Jan Mydlář, beheads here 16 officers of Wallenstein's army who deserted from the battle of Lützen. All the commanders take their places on the tribune, only Wallenstein himself is not here. At the last moment, he was stopped by a young imperial messenger with an important message. This is how Jan Bauer's historical love novel begins dramatically, depicting the last act of the life of the Duke of Frýdlant.
With the author's exaggeration, he intertwines Wallenstein's hesitation whether to oppose the emperor with his sudden amorous outburst towards a young Protestant noblewoman. For once, the aging warlord overlooks the fact that the stars are not in his favour and succumbs to the call of his heart. He does not heed the warnings of his astrologer Senni and lives only for his mysterious lover, who takes him back to the days of his turbulent youth. The completely blinded Wallenstein is unaware that the star of his heart is not the star of hope, but of his destruction.
