The humoresque used to be short and promised to entertain. It built on a story and a narrator who did not hesitate to exaggerate. Her fondness for novelty brought her closer to common speech and ungrammatical expressions. Its home turf belonged to newspapers and magazines. She therefore hungered for attractive and fashionable, if not sensational, themes. She was at home in the city and in the small town. She enjoyed confrontations between the extraordinary and the ordinary, the natural and the staged, the large and the small. It gave a chance to great beginners in the field of beautiful prose. We believe it has something to say to today's readers and listeners as well.
