The case of Charles Dexter Ward and other monstrosities
Providence, Rhode Island, 1928. A strange patient has mysteriously disappeared from the sixth floor of a private psychiatric hospital. In the locked room, all that was left of him was an open window and a ball of blue-grey dust. The shadow of suspicion falls on the family doctor, Dr. Willett, who was the last to see the patient and has some inkling of his occult studies...
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is a horror novel by the American great H. P. Lovecraft. It follows a young history buff's exploration of his demonic ancestor, who he eventually becomes quite obsessed with. The work is praised for its masterful blend of gothic horror, dark alchemy and cosmic horror, and for its detailed depiction of the ancient city of Providence.
In this edition it is supplemented by the short stories The Lurking Fury, The Beast in the Cave, The Alchemist, The Tomb, The Tree and The Ancient Nation. The book concludes with an essay on Lovecraft and the occult, an extensive appendix of historical material, and a rich translator's notebook. The edition is accompanied by original illustrations by Marcel Hamza.
