The author vividly depicts the atmosphere of the medieval town, the streets teeming with life and the gloomy corners where one should not linger. Conflicts between Protestants and Catholics are growing, there is talk of a great uprising against the monarchy, violence is in the air. Mercenaries in the imperial service behave like unscrupulous bullies and robbers. Barbaric and Stein are trying to prevent their violent acts as well. But they still have their main task in mind - to investigate the disappearance of an astrologer and find the book that is in such great demand. Gradually they discover that the case of the missing stargazer is just one thread in a web of crimes.
