The Devil's Brother-in-Law

The story tells of a young man named Petr, who is driven from his home by his evil and calculating stepmother. Petr tries in vain to find work, but everywhere he goes, they tell him to go to hell. And so, he goes to serve in hell. As a reward for his faithful service, he receives a magic purse from which he can take an unlimited amount of money; however, his hellish service marks him with an ugly appearance. With its help, he performs good deeds and helps those in need. When the king, who has also found himself in financial distress, turns to him, Petr sets a condition: he will help if he is given the royal daughter's hand in marriage. The two older daughters refuse Petr, but the youngest, despite his ugliness, is willing to marry him out of love for her father. Petr washes himself in a magical spring and becomes handsome; the two vain royal daughters are carried away by a devil, thus making Petr his brother-in-law.
