The High Priestess, a Cure by Rome
Although the novel 'The High Priestess', subtitled 'A Roman Cure', is set in a historical period and features historical figures, it is not a historical novel in the true sense of the word. After all, neither the Annals nor other historical documents mention ordinary people, and almost never women. While this late republic was founded on democracy, it only applied to men. The fate of a runaway Boii princess who dreams of serving as a Vestal Virgin in Rome becomes entangled with the destinies of well-known Roman families, and peripherally with a young Julius Caesar, about whose youth no detailed records exist. Her non-Roman upbringing destines her for a clash with the much-lauded system. She wants independence in her choice of profession and, perhaps, in love. She intends to be a physician, at a time when no woman in Rome practises medicine, nor is she allowed to, let alone a high priestess bound by taboo laws. This courageous woman undergoes a transformation in both her personal and professional life, leading to a bitter fall. Independent of the course of events, a Roman slave tells the story of his own fate. His narrative is interwoven with the main plot, showing life in Rome as he sees it. Will their destinies intersect?
