The Last Captain

"A sophisticated, suspenseful novel of love and intrigue from the golden days of Hollywood, this is Fitzgerald's The Last Captain. A story of great ambition and strangely accidental love passion rises to dramatic heights and then plunges to black depths. Hope and despair change the narrative angle at surprising moments and sharpen the contrasts between the characters. The personality of the young, charismatic and extremely capable film producer, who senses the impending tragedy but manages to hide his fears, perhaps defies the author's initial intentions in the most impressive places. The heroes of the novel succumb in similar moments to uncertainty and confusion - and then, to their own detriment, passionately persist in them. The novel, whose characters are said by many to be among the most vivid and compelling in world literature, is published in a new translation that embraces the mysterious and profound beauty of Fitzgerald's language.
