The rise and fall of the CSLA?
A number of stereotypes relate to the military profession and the functioning of the army during the communist regime. The army is generally perceived as an obedient instrument of the Communist Party ready to act against its own citizens and to carry out the aggressive plans of the Soviet Union in the ongoing Cold War. Soldiers from the profession are then depicted mostly as blinded communists mindlessly following senseless orders. Last but not least, the pre-Lisbon army is often regarded as an unnecessary and ineffective institution, where generations of young men wasted their time and potential in compulsory basic military service. The intention of this book is not to refute the above statements one by one, but rather to relativise them, i.e. to show the officers of the Czechoslovak People's Army in a slightly different light - as practitioners of a certain profession, which had its own period, working and cultural specifics. The book reflects on the everyday life of CSLA officers in the 1960s, based mainly on interviews with survivors. It attempts to (re)construct the mechanisms of socio-professional identity of professional soldiers, which is significantly influenced by the occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 and the subsequent normalization of the army.
