Theatre of the Dead

A new, reworked edition of the dark fantasy from the author of the bestseller “Like Death Itself”

The streets of the city of Charogne are buzzing with unease. The discovery of a woman's body in the harbour has shaken everyone. It has caused the most trouble for Averius, the captain of the city watch, who, together with his friend Darius, a priest from the local cathedral, sets out on the trail of a vile conspiracy. But they are not alone. Lady Valerie Foxworth, a Lamplighter from a neighbouring country, is determined to do whatever it takes to help bring about justice. Or so she thinks.

None of them have any idea that someone else is approaching the city. He carries with him a pamphlet advertising a theatre performance and a sack full of heads. He is a dark legend used to frighten bandits and other villains. The mad executioner. A hunter whom nothing can stop. A greater monster than his victims. Death incarnate. For Nathaniel Darnsworth, the murder in Charogne is just another job. At least, until he finds out that he is to meet his destiny there… and that a performance is approaching that the citizens of the city will not soon forget. If they survive it at all.

Jakub Hoza

Born in 1978 in Benešov. Although for a long time he thought a hat and a whip would suit him, he eventually studied “Electronic Computer Systems” and now works in the IT department of an unnamed health insurance company. He mainly writes “deviant” dark fantasy and “splatterpunk” action sci-fi. He has published eight books so far (Theatre Macabre, Fetters of Fate, To Go Through Fire, To Hell and Back, Like Death Itself, Scorched Earth, Sculptors of Flesh, and No Return) and occasionally contributes a short story to Pevnost magazine. For more than thirty years, Hoza has been engaged in the theoretical and practical study of close combat, especially with bladed weapons. Some of the walls in his Prague flat are so hung with steel that they look like a castle armoury. Besides that, he devotes himself mainly to his family and writing. He occasionally re-reads something by his favourite authors Sapkowski, Kulhánek, and Pratchett with great enjoyment.
