Jake Edwards, a successful businessman and incorrigible womaniser on the verge of turning forty, hasn't thought about the sanatorium in northern Michigan for almost thirty years – not since that terrible night when he escaped from it as a child, never looking back. When Petra, a stranger, shows up at his company claiming they know each other and were best friends as children, Jake initially suspects a prank from an ex-girlfriend. That is, until Petra disappears, leaving behind nothing but a blood-spattered flat and a few mysterious clues that lead back to the abandoned sanatorium.
With the help of a hypnotist, Jake slowly begins to uncover his dark past, which he had hoped was buried deep forever. His fate intertwines with Charlie, a newly divorced nurse who has bought Wilder's Grove for a suspiciously low price – the beautiful Victorian house where Jake spent his childhood. Despite her initial excitement, Charlie begins to doubt whether the purchase was as good a deal as it seemed. Strange, inexplicable things are happening in the house, and her neighbours are giving both her and the house a wide berth. She and Jake soon discover that the house holds secrets for both of them that will take them by surprise.
