More than just travelling.
Pilgrimage has become fashionable nowadays. It seems many people long for a longer journey. But how should we interpret this desire? What do those who take a few days off to be in nature actually long for?
For one, it is a desire to step out of ordinary life. To jump off the daily merry-go-round and, for a moment, devote oneself to something completely different, to just walk and not have to perform. Another reason for this longing is a return to a simple life. We can’t pack many things into a rucksack for a hike. We must consciously limit ourselves so that the luggage is not too heavy. And suddenly we realise how little we need to live.
We also long to experience nature. We wander through it and perceive its magic. As we walk, we admire the beauty of the landscape. But we also experience the heat when the sun is blazing, and at other times a downpour and strong wind that make our journey difficult. We get closer to nature and realise that we are a part of it. Nature does not judge; it allows us to be who we are. On a pilgrimage, we meet ourselves. We are heading towards liberation from daily worries and problems. And what's more, during this time we are “offline,” we are unreachable, but we are fully present in the moment. As we walk, we become aware of ourselves, we meet ourselves, we come to ourselves.
