This book provides a comprehensive description of the entire vaccination process, from the history of childhood immunisation, through the development and types of vaccines, to the vaccination schedule, specific indication groups for childhood immunisation, individual schemes, and the legal aspects of vaccination.
Vaccination is a process that begins in childhood and continues into old age. Along with water disinfection, modern medicine knows nothing more effective in the prevention of infectious diseases. However, vaccination is a relatively young methour It was only in the 18th century that vaccination was described and developed in more detail. Logically, vaccination starts with the most vulnerable, i.e., small children. More and new vaccines are being discovered and developed for them, vaccination schedules are being adjusted, and the number of diseases that can be vaccinated against is expanding. It has become clear that, especially among children, there are vulnerable groups of people with compromised defences and limitations of the immune system. Susceptibility to infectious diseases in childhood is influenced not only by chronic diseases and congenital developmental defects but also by transplants, the increased availability of cancer treatment, and weakened immune systems. When we add to this the growing number of children travelling to countries with a higher incidence of infections, we have a large group of children who are at risk of developing infectious diseases. Vaccination has become one of the fastest developing parts of medicine and is an integral part of primary and specialised care for paediatric patients. The possibilities for vaccinating children today have expanded significantly over the last twenty years. A new phenomenon is the refusal of vaccination, starting vaccination at a later age, vaccinating the children of foreigners and migrants, and the expansion of indication groups for primary vaccination.
The book is intended for general practitioners for children and adolescents, paediatricians, general practitioners, infectious disease specialists, doctors at vaccination centres, epidemiologists, doctors at public health institutes, and doctors at regional public health authorities.
