Visiting professors
Britain's favourite university novel finally comes out as an audiobook performed by a quartet of actors
When Philip Swallow, a sedentary teacher from the University of Papridge, England, finds himself on a semester-long residency in Euphoria, California, and overseas teaching ace Morris Zapp lands in his chair in exchange, the fun is taken care of. Under the baton of a classic of the university novel genre, things start happening in both cities that make the layman wonder, the expert marvel and the audience giggle. The honourable gentlemen in the host country will lay bare their cultural and family backgrounds, themselves, and the full range of comical antics of British and American intellectuals. Universities may be, according to David Lodge, "cathedrals of the modern age" in whose professorial rituals the outside world has no say, but if the sexual revolution of 1969 is raging, why rot in ivory towers of academia?
They wrote about Hosting Professors
"In an aviation era of plastic cutlery, heightened security and ever tinier legroom, we are flattered that there is still an older book that brings so much excitement to intercontinental travel."
The Guardian
"An incredibly complex work in a small, clever and aesthetically interesting whole (...) serves up various themes such as England vs. America, the sixties, marriage, literary science, sexual revolution, midlife crisis and what to do about it, the origins of the feminist movement or the position of the book in modern times."

David Lodge
A graduate of English at the University of London, he is one of the few literary scholars to have made a name for himself in the realm of fiction, into which, moreover, he has richly smuggled plots from his own field. From 1960 to 1987 he lectured at Birmingham, where he and his colleague Malcolm Bradbury invented the genre of the university novel and populated it with figures of professionally deformed intellectuals. The author parodied the university environment and the limits of its actors especially in his free trilogy Visiting Professors (1975, no. for the first time in 1980), The World is Small (1984, no. 1988) and Nice Work(1988, no. 1993), to which entrepreneurial publishers sometimes glue the later works Profesorské hrátky (2001, no. 2002) or The Quietest Punishment (2008, no. 2009). His prose works against the doctrine of Catholicism are also humorous, especially the sexual farce Day of Destruction in the British Museum (1965, no. 1974). Of Lodge's scholarly works analysing the relationship between fiction and factuality or - like his devilish jack-of-all-trades Morris Zapp - the legacy of Jane Austen, only a collection of essays, How to Write a Novel, has been published in this country.
