We could see each other better in the dark
A novel about a family in which relationships are marked by exile
Thirty years ago the family had to flee totalitarianism and "normalization". Since then, the relationship of its members has been marked by everything that the exile has forever broken. Over the years they have all rebuilt their lives, albeit on different continents, knowing that they are not from nowhere. Distance, little time, that they share together, and a different reality, in which they live, their bonds have weakened. As the daughter flies across the ocean to meet her mother for what may be the last time, she reviews both their lives and searches for understanding. And after her arrival, she will be in for many more surprises that will show her that the end of life can be the most intense, profound and beautiful moment one can experience.
They wrote about the book
"A beautiful and brave novel, and so personal. Pathways, searching for answers, places, roots and uprooting, with a mother so complicated, so lost, and family, who suffers from exile. A great juxtaposition of characters, Jana, who harms, and Milena, who heals."
Casa del Libro
"Monika Zgustová's most personal work yet, a great novel that speaks about the senselessness of totalitarianism."
Eva Cosculluela, ABC Cultural
"With lightness of touch, lightness of spirit, emotional depth, and clarity of resolution, Zgust tells the story of all that comes with leaving a land of constraint; as is happening now in Eastern Europe. “
Pedro Bosqued, Heraldo de Aragón
