Youth in the Shit 4 - Young man in the shack
Nick Twisp took a break from his journal for a few weeks, but it wasn't because he had given up on the idea of deep and self-inquiring analysis. He simply had his hands full dealing with the pitfalls of unexpected prosperity. He continues to live in Ukiah in the black models of "Mussolini's return" and, apart from a few minor problems with Sheeni, he doesn't really miss anything. But once again the noose begins to tighten around him, and so he has no choice but to bury Carlotta and hit the road again, this time with considerably less financial security. At one point everything seems so hopeless that the most sensible solution would probably be to surrender to the law. He's got so many wrinkles in his past with the FBI, and now he's going to add more to them, that he'll have an apartment and food to eat until he dies. The million-dollar losses are multiplied, wherever he steps, the grass will not grow for a hundred years. But it wouldn't be Nick if he didn't not only pull it off brilliantly, but he always makes the most of it.
