The Merkur Steam Engine is a polytechnic toy that actually functions using the same principles as a real steam engine. It rotates in both directions and it can be used to drive other machine models. The base is fitted with a steam boiler, valves, an armature, a steam cylinder and a timing and crank mechanism. The steam is fed from the boiler via a supply pipe. Solid alcohol is used for heating the boiler.
Operating Instructions:
1. Place the steam machine on a non-flammable surface.
2. Pour approximately 150ml of clean hot water into the boiler through either the whistle or safety valve using the supplied funnel. Make sure that the boiler is not more than two-thirds full of water by checking the level on the watermark. Due to the surface tension of water, it is possible that it might not reach the watermark, this is easily resolved by blowing into the boiler. After filling the tank with water, make sure that both the whistle and the safety valve have gaskets and screw both of them into the holes on top of the boiler.
3. Install the chimney on the steam generator, check the gaskets and lightly lubricate all moving parts for easier operation (flywheel shaft, weighing cam, piston, and the timing crank slide).
4. Attach one cube of solid alcohol to the boilerplate, ignite the alcohol and insert the boilerplate into the furnace.
5. Open the whistle, by moving the lever vertically, and wait for it to sound.
6. Close the whistle and turn the flywheel several times in either direction to start the machine. If the machine fails to start,(due to transport, uneven handling, etc.) it is possible to adjust it by moving the timing block, into which the inlet tube opens, towards or away from the flywheel. This adjustment is only possible only after the two screws which hold the block onto the base holder are loosened. After adjustment, the screws must be tightened to prevent the block from moving again.
7. It is necessary to continuously check and replenish the boiler water.
Notice:
A. Place the steam machine on a non-flammable surface.
B. When pouring cold water, we need about two spirits to run the machine.
C) For a longer lifetime of use, lubricate all moving parts frequently and tighten the screws on the watermark against possible water leakage. If necessary replace the gaskets underneath the whistle and the safety valve.
D) Before storing the machine, it is advisable to pour the water out of the boiler. Carefully clean and lubricate the machine carefully with oil, both the moving parts and all the polished parts of the steam engine. By following these instructions, this steam engine will provide you with years of entertainment.
