The Musical Fidelity M3x ViNYL phono preamplifier is designed to not bother you with any limits. Connectivity is straightforward, with only one input and output on offer. Even under demanding conditions, the input cannot be overloaded and the output limited in its ability to deliver superior sound. The M3x ViNYL can be set up for MM or MC transmissions and precision loading. This model offers the most advanced technical and sonic features, just like the M6x ViNYL, but at a still affordable price.
A discrete circuit consists of electronic components that are disparate, separate devices, also called discrete components. These can be "passive" components, such as resistors, capacitors and inductors, as well as "active" components, which in this case are transistors. The opposite of this would be an integrated circuit that uses operational amplifiers (Op-Amps) in the signal chain. The music industry often uses specialized operational amplifiers built for audio applications, which allow very small and efficient electronics to be produced while saving designers time. However, countless hours of listening tests and years of experience have shown that even the best operational amplifiers are not as neutral, natural, dynamic or lively - all characteristics of the "Musical Fidelity sound". For this reason, Musical Fidelity is going back to a traditional, discreet design. Where standard integrated circuit phono preamplifiers have tens or hundreds of components, discrete designs will use hundreds or thousands of components for comparison. This means a longer design process, but Musical Fidelity says it will give you better sound for your money.
A special toroidal transformer with a low saturation core reduces the level of electromagnetic radiation, which is essential because otherwise no phono preamplifier could ever work properly. Together with the distance between the transformer, amplifier section and electromagnetic shielding, this results in incredibly high signal-to-noise ratio. When a preamplifier is working with several hundred microvolts from a transmission line, every decibel of signal-to-noise ratio is extremely important. In addition, in this product, Musical Fidelity engineers have implemented a new proprietary power solution for the first time that has zero standby power consumption. This makes it a perfectly green product and completely unique in its segment.
Musical Fidelity M3x ViNYL uses divided passive equalization for its RIAA curve in separate amplification stages without global negative feedback loops. This is a more expensive solution to design and implement, but it provides the most accurate representation of the ideal EQ curve. Split passive equalization allows for better impedance matching and lower deviation from the ideal RIAA curve.
The M3x ViNYL has a steel chassis and a strong, heavy aluminium face, which gives the whole component exceptional rigidity as well as excellent isolation against external interference. A key factor in keeping the signal-to-noise ratio at the highest possible level is the superior distance between the power transformer and the amplifier section. Also worth mentioning is the quality of the external chassis design, which is exceedingly hilarious, as are the electronics inside. Everything is hand-wired to the highest manufacturing standards, which Musical Fidelity achieves by moving production entirely to the EU.
