The ground-breaking Nintendo 3DS is the first gaming handheld capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D images without the help of 3D glasses. The 3D effect settings can be adjusted with a dedicated slider located on the device. Alternatively, you can turn it off altogether and play in the classic 2D mode.

Compared to its Nintendo DS predecessor, the 3DS introduces some very welcome control improvements. The D-pad and dedicated buttons have been retained, but the handheld now also has a Circle Pad for 360° control and a pair of sensors that elevate gaming experience to a whole new level. The motion and gyro sensors detect horizontal and vertical movements of the device and react accordingly.

The device has two screens. The top 3.5” display with an 800 x 240 resolution serves as the main screen, while the bottom 320 × 240 (3") touchscreen is designed for control and game maps. Both provide brilliant image with 16.77 million colours. The bottom touch screen can be controlled either with your finger or with the included telescopic stylus that is stored in the unit itself. Another point of interest are two integrated external cameras that allow you to take 3D 0.3 Mpx photos and display them directly on the top screen. The device is also equipped with an internal camera and integrated microphone.

Visuals alone do not make a game, so the handheld is equipped with a high quality speaker as well, with optional headphones connectivity. Its WiFi 802.11b/g technology supports multiplayer functions and allows up to 16 players and sharing of game statistics, scores, etc. Secure access to the internet is possible via a wireless access point with WPA/WPA2 support. The device is equipped with a game card slot, memory card slot for SD/SDHC, cradle and charging connector, and stereo audio output.

The handheld comes with a 2 GB SD memory card, which serves as a storage for downloaded games, sound recordings, or your MP3 and AAC music files. The 3DS model is backward compatible with older DS and DSi game cards, all games, and most apps released so far. The device is powered by a Li-Ion battery with a battery life reaching 5 hours when playing 3DS games.
