Playmobil
Playmobil is well known for its high-quality plastic figures, which are popular with children worldwide. The Playmobil brand was launched in 1974, but the history of the company dates back to the late 19th century.
From decorative accessories, through a crisis, to worldwide popularity
The company was founded in 1876 by a German named Andreas Brandstätter. Originally, the company focussed on manufacturing decorative hardware and locks. At the beginning of the 20th century, Andreas's son, Georg, took control of the company, and strategic production began to take a different direction. Under the brand name Geobra, the product range was extended to include metal toys, which led to great success – the products were sold not only across Europe but also overseas. And so the family business prospered.
In the mid-20th century, Horst Brandstätter, today's sole owner, joined the company, and production moved from metal products to plastic, significantly expanding its range and gaining new markets. In the 1970s, however, the oil crisis resulted in a steep drop in sales. Brandstätter realised that it was time for new ideas and instructed corporate designer and developer of toys Hans Beck to create something new.
Innovative Playmobil kits
In 1974 Playmobil was introduced as a completely new and innovative way of playing. Based on 7.5 cm action figures with moving limbs, Playmobil kits inspired children around the world and became one of the most popular toy manufacturers. Previously, each hand-crafted piece consisted of seven parts; now, machine production allows for a production capacity of 100 million figures a year.
Playmobil focusses on the development of children's imagination while having fun. Playmobil sets with different themes can be combined together, allowing children to create a world of opportunities. Among the most popular series for girls are the dollhouse and its equipment, the zoo, princesses and fairies. Boys, on the other hand, enjoy pirate kits, knights, or building their own city complete with firefighters, police, a hospital and much more.
