The QNAP TL-R1200S-RP NAS expansion unit is used to increase the storage capacity of compatible network storage devices, computers, and servers running Windows and Ubuntu operating systems. This rackmount device offers twelve bays for 3.5" or 2.5" hard drives with a SATA 6Gb/s interface. The entire system is supported by a 250W redundant power supply, which helps prevent unexpected outages and keeps the device running continuously. Connection to the host system is achieved using the supplied QXP PCIe expansion card and the included SFF-8088 cables.

Expansion Unit Interface
Data transfer between the host computer and the storage unit occurs via the SFF-8088 interface, which supports four 6Gb/s SATA transfer channels per connected cable. The total transfer speed is up to 24Gb/s. This solution provides reliable read and write performance for the smooth transfer of large volumes of data. It offers a stable environment for demanding backup processes and daily storage tasks. The storage unit can serve either as a direct capacity expansion for an existing network drive in storage pool mode, or as a separate external space for transferring and storing large files.
Power Supply Redundancy
The device includes a redundant power supply with a total output of 250W, which effectively prevents unexpected system-wide outages. If one module fails, the second power supply takes over the load without interrupting operation or causing data loss. This system maintains the continuity of business processes and reduces the risk of downtime. A damaged power module can be hot-swapped without needing to shut down the connected drives.
Managing the TL-R1200S-RP Storage
The disk array is configured using software tools corresponding to the currently connected operating system. For Windows and Ubuntu, the QNAP JBOD Manager tool is used to monitor the current status of the drives, fan rotation speeds, and firmware updates. When connected to a compatible QNAP NAS, all management is handled within the integrated Storage & Snapshots application in the QTS or QuTS hero systems.
Drive Support
The twelve bays can be fitted with 3.5" and 2.5" hard drives with a SATA HDD interface. Each drive connects directly to a dedicated SATA channel, thus preventing unwanted bottlenecks during intensive data transfers. Users can configure individual drives as separate storage volumes or create software RAID arrays for enhanced protection of stored data against damage.
Connecting to the Expansion Unit
Installing the supplied QXP PCIe card into the host computer, server, or QNAP NAS ensures the entire system is up and running quickly. This additional hardware supports stable transfer speeds without performance fluctuations, even under prolonged heavy loads. The physical connection between the expansion unit and the card is made using the included one-metre long high-speed SFF-8088 cables.
