Paw Protector is a balm for the regular care of dog and cat paw pads. It helps to maintain their hydration, elasticity, and good condition during normal wear and tear, friction, and exposure to high or low outdoor temperatures. It contains aloe vera, avocado oil, glycerin, and vitamin E. These ingredients are part of hydrating, soothing, and conditioning care for the skin of the paw pads and help to limit excessive drying during daily activity. The balm can be used before and after a walk or increased physical activity. It is suitable, for example, for city dogs walking on hard surfaces, active dogs, and as part of regular paw care in summer and winter.
PSH currently lists vitamin E, aloe vera, glycerin, and avocado oil as the main ingredients. The ÚSKVBL also lists citric acid and sunflower seed extract among the active substances for the approved PSH Paw Protector.
A highly relevant veterinary study published in the journal Veterinary Dermatology investigated a moisturising product with glycerol and propylene glycol on the experimentally disrupted skin of six healthy beagles. When applied twice daily for one week, lower transepidermal water loss and other signs of faster skin barrier recovery were measured at the treated sites. Study details are available from the publisher, Wiley.
The balm is suitable for regular care of paw pads and their protection during normal activity. However, if a paw pad is deeply cracked, bleeding, significantly swollen, weeping, or the paw is painful, it is not advisable to rely solely on at-home cosmetic care. Similarly, it is advisable to address the underlying cause if a dog repeatedly limps, licks its paws intensively, or the condition of the paw pads worsens despite regular care.
