The QNAP TL-D1600S NAS expansion unit is used to externally expand the storage capacity of existing network storage, computers or servers. It provides space for installing hard drives and fast SSDs. Users connect the unit using the supplied PCIe expansion card and high-speed cable, which delivers stable transfer speeds. The tower design accommodates twelve hard disk drives and four flash solid-state drives. The device can be used for backing up large amounts of data in homes and offices. It is used to directly increase the capacity of a compatible QNAP NAS. QXP PCIe cards expand the connectivity options for computers running Windows and Ubuntu operating systems. Combination of Hard Drives and SSDs
The QNAP TL-D1600S NAS expansion unit contains twelve bays for 3.5" or 2.5" SATA drives and four separate bays for 2.5" SATA SSDs with a speed of 6Gb/s. Each bay has a physical lock that prevents the drive from being accidentally removed during operation. The lockable drive bays increase the overall physical security of the stored data. The system supports JBOD configuration and divides the SFF ports for specific groups of slots.

The QNAP JBOD Manager desktop utility provides an instant overview of the health of the installed drives. The user can verify the current temperatures, fan rotation speed and firmware version. The total transfer speed is up to 24Gb/s, which surpasses common eSATA or USB standards. The direct connection of each drive to a dedicated channel speeds up both data reading and writing.
