The Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (Model A065) is the second generation of the popular A056 lens, which has been acclaimed by photographers around the world. The new lens retains the f/2.8 aperture throughout the range and adds new VC optical stabilization and significantly improved close focusing. Yet it remains the smallest and lightest in its class - at 70mm it measures just 156.5mm and weighs 855g. Compactness is achieved by shortening the range to 180mm compared to conventional 70-200mm lenses. The optics have been completely redesigned to further enhance the already excellent image performance. The result is an ideal combination of quality and mobility that enhances the joy of photography. The Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 lens is designed for Sony FE digital mirrorless cameras, compatible with Full Frame sensors, offers autofocus, dust and moisture resistance and features a 67mm filter thread.
The design of the 70-180mm F2.8 G2 has been completely redesigned to achieve uncompromising optical quality throughout the zoom range. The optical design includes 20 elements in 15 groups, while the precise combination of special optical elements - one XLD, three LD, two GM (aspherical molded glass) and one hybrid aspherical element - significantly improves the correction of chromatic aberration and other optical defects. Special BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Second Generation) coating suppresses glare and veiling, contributing to a clear, high-contrast, high-resolution image even in challenging lighting conditions. In addition, the lens offers a soft and gentle bokeh that produces an f/2.8 aperture, expanding the photographer's expressive possibilities. From snapshots to portraits to landscapes, the lens offers a wide range of creative possibilities in any situation.
The 70-180mm F2.8 G2's autofocus drive utilizes the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor first used in the previous generation (Model A056) and takes its proven speed and accuracy. The system is characterized by an extremely fast and smooth response, which is one of the highlights in TAMRON's history. Focusing is done in increments of 0.005mm, less than a tenth of the thickness of a human hair - allowing the photographer to execute their intent with absolute precision. Focus calculations, which have been further improved based on the development of the 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 (A067) and 150-500mm F5-6.7 (A057), bring significantly improved tracking of moving objects, such as vehicles or sports scenes, which ensuresthat you can capture the most important moments - whether it's when you're shooting, or when shooting video. In addition, the linear motor makes the lens nearly silent, making it ideal in environments where silence is a must.
To take full advantage of the 70-180mm F2.8 G2's excellent portability, the lens is equipped with TAMRON's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization system. The System effectively suppresses camera shake often experienced when shooting at longer focal lengths or close focusing, allowing for stable images even in challenging conditions. The VC is also highly effective in low-light situations, such as evening or night photography or in dimly lit interiors where hand shake is common. In addition, the lens uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to select optimal compensation characteristics when shooting video at focal lengths up to 100mm, further supporting the model's superior optical performance.
Every single part of the lens has been meticulously re-thought down to the smallest detail, resulting in an improved design that enhances ergonomics and overall operability. The lens surface has a glossy black finish with higher abrasion resistance, making it less susceptible to scratches and fingerprints. Grip has also been improved. The smoothly curved, glossy surface of the branded ring gives the lens an elegant look and highlights its functional aesthetics and high quality workmanship.
The single 67mm filter diameter not only provides excellent portability when travelling with multiple lenses, but also the ability to share expensive filters (such as polarizing and ND) between different lenses without having to buy additional sizes. Plus, there's no hassle of finding different sized caps when switching between lenses. In addition to superior image quality, this seemingly small feature brings maximum comfort and practicality across the entire product line.
Thanks to the optimised optical design, close-up photography with autofocus is now possible, whereas the first generation lens only allowed manual focusing. Compared to its predecessor (Model A056), the MOD has been shortened to 0.3 m (11.8 inches) at 70 mm and 0.85 m (33.5 inches) at 180 mm. Working distance at 70mm is just 12cm, greatly expanding the creative possibilities of a single lens - allowing you to get closer to your subject, achieve soft bokeh and create impressive shots with minimal depth of field. With excellent magnification of 1 : 2.6 to 70 mm and 1 : The 4.7 by 180mm can take close-up shots with high visual impact - for example, zooming from a portrait to a specific part of the face.
The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 lens is compatible with the dedicated TAMRON Lens Utility™ software (for PC and Android™ 3 operating system), which was developed in-house by TAMRON. Software allows you to change lens settings, assign functions to the camera body, and update firmware if needed. When using the mobile version, you can also control some functions remotely, without physically touching the lens. Users can customize the lens control to suit their own style of shooting or video recording for a more personal and comfortable creative experience.
