The PENTAX KF delivers super-high resolution images thanks to a state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.24 effective megapixels and high-speed 14-bit image data reading. Combined with an AA filter-free optical design, this image sensor delivers super-high resolution images. Also, by combining a high-performance acceleration unit with the high-speed PRIME MII image engine, the PENTAX KF effectively minimizes noise at all sensitivity levels, capturing images with rich gradation and fine detail even when shooting at super-high sensitivity at the highest ISO 102400.

Combining a compact, easy-to-carry body with a dust-proof, weatherproof design with 100 seals throughout the body and excellent cold resistance in temperatures down to -10°C, the PENTAX KF is a reliable companion even in harsh conditions such as rain or locations prone to dust and frost. To ensure a firm grip on the camera body in gloved hands, the grip, rear panel control buttons and mode dial have been designed and shaped for optimum maneuverability during active outdoor photography - such as climbing, camping or attending sporting events.

In addition to the outdoor LCD monitor, whose brightness level can be instantly adjusted to the lighting level of the shooting location, itis also equipped with a red-backlit display function that is friendly to the photographer's eye when he/she gets used to the dark location during astronomical photography. The camera is ready for advanced astronomical photography with an optional O-GPS2 GPS unit available.

The PENTAX KF features a glass prism viewfinder in its compact body with the same optics and finish as higher-end models. With approximately 100% field of view and nearly 0.95x magnification, the PENTAX KF viewfinder provides a large and clear view of the subject for quick and easy focus confirmation and framing. It also provides a dual electronic dial system identical to higher-end models and original PENTAX photographic features such as the Hyper Program system, which allows the user to instantly switch exposure mode from program to aperture priority or shutter priority without taking their eye off the viewfinder.

The variable angle of the PENTAX KF's LCD monitor allows you to adjust the monitor to the desired angle, making it easy to compose images in a variety of applications: High-angle photography using outstretched arms, low-angle shots taken from ground level or astronomical photography with the camera pointed upwards towards a sky full of stars. The camera also features a unique air-gap-free design in which the air space between the high-resolution LCD panel with approximately 1,037,000 dots and the protective cover has been filled with a special resin material that effectively reduces light reflection and scattering and improves visibility when shooting outdoors.

The Pentax KF features a hybrid autofocus system for fast shooting operation with Live View and the high-precision 11-sensor SAFOX X AF system, nine of which are cross-type for precise and fast focusing. The camera features a 77-segment metering system and a high-speed shutter with a maximum shutter speed of 1/6000 sec, so it can capture fast-moving subjects in crisp detail. A DR dust removal mechanism is also included to help keep the sensor clean even with frequent lens changes.

For creative work, there is a Custom Image function that allows the user to customize the look of the image to their liking right in the camera. The Pentax KF also offers an interval shooting function for time-lapse photography and supports wireless LAN connectivity via ImageSync, which is available for free for convenient photo transfer and remote control of the camera via smartphone.

It offers automatic firing with scene analysis, red-eye reduction, long-time synchronization and first-pass synchronization. Flash sync time is 1/180 s with exposure compensation from -2.0 to +1.0 EV. It also supports external P-TTL flashes with first or second lamella sync, ultra-short time sync and wireless sync with advanced light control.

The Pentax KF offers automatic and manual white balance with fine adjustment in seven steps on the A-B and G-M axes, or colour temperature adjustment. The SMC Pentax-DA 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR is a standard weatherproof zoom lens introduced in 2009 for APS-C digital SLR cameras with KAF mount. It's a more robust version of the DA 18-55mm AL II with the same optical construction but with added dust and moisture sealing, making it a popular choice for travel and outdoor photography, especially in conjunction with sealed Pentax DSLR bodies.

The optical design includes 11 elements in 8 groups with Super Multi-Coating (SMC) coating, including one aspherical and one ED element for higher sharpness and lower aberrations. The lens allows stops down to f/22-38, focuses from 25 cm and offers a magnification of 0.34×, which is very good for a set zoom. It has a 52 mm filter thread, weighs 230 g and has dimensions of 68 × 67.5 mm. The autofocus is driven by a screwdrive motor, but the Quick-Shift Focus function allows instant manual focusing without switching off the AF. The lens has no internal focusing or aperture ring, but comes with the PH-RBC52 bayonet sun hood and usually the S80-120 soft case.

You'll appreciate the solid construction, effective sealing and surprisingly good image quality for a kit lens, especially at apertures from f/5.6 to f/11. It resists glare well, chromatic aberration is low and well controlled. Sharpness is highest in the 35-45mm range, while it can be softer at the widest and longest focal lengths when the aperture is fully open. Bokeh is average, the focus ring is smaller and less suitable for manual focusing. Compared to the DA L and AL II versions, the WR version features a metal bayonet, durability and reliability in harsh conditions.
