Discover the Fascinating World of Wild Animals
This Schleich Hippo figurine will allow you to explore the interesting world of wild animals. What is a hippo actually like? The hippopotamus is the heaviest species of even-toed mammals and the third heaviest land animal. An adult male measures up to 360cm, reaching a height of 165cm at the withers and weighing over three tonnes. Eyes, ear bolts and nostrils are placed very high on the head, which is ideal for life in water. The nostrils and ears are fitted with valves and the hippopotamus can close them when immersed in water. The teeth are very well developed. The incisors in the lower jaw are pin-shaped and point diagonally forward. The canines are transformed into tusks, which reach a respectable size, especially in males. They are about 35cm in length from the gums and can reach up to 70cm in total. When tearing food, hippoes use their solid, leathery lips, while the teeth serve only for getting to the roots of aquatic plants. The skin of hippos is very sensitive despite its thickness and can easily crack in dry conditions. The saying about someone being as thick-skinned as a hippo in the sense of being insensitive is therefore not actually accurate.
