The sole is the key part of the shoe that comes into direct contact with the surface. Its main function is to provide traction, protection and support to the foot. Drop in footwear refers to the height difference between the heel and toe of the shoe. It has a major effect on how the foot hits the surface when walking or running. A low drop (0-4 mm) promotes a more natural forefoot stride. A higher drop (8-12 mm) may be more appropriate for runners with a greater tendency to heel strike or those who require more cushioning.
