Serrapeptase is a natural, protein-splitting proteolytic enzyme produced by a friendly bacteria from the genus Serratia, which lives in the intestines of the silkworm. Serrapeptase was discovered in the 1960s and has since become a widely studied and used ingredient in various areas of food supplements. Although it was originally isolated from bacteria found in the digestive tract of the silkworm, today serrapeptase is produced by fermenting these bacteria under laboratory conditions. Serrapeptase, also known as serratiopeptidase, is a proteolytic enzyme that was originally isolated from the intestines of the bacteria Serratia marcescens found in the digestive tract of the silkworm (Bombyx mori). This enzyme is able to break down proteins into smaller particles, making it a popular food supplement.
Why did we replace the ISO 22000:2018 certification with IFS Food?
The entire production process is certified according to IFS Food. IFS Food is a globally recognised certification for the safety and quality of food products, designed for quality audits of production processes and products. This uniform, internationally recognised food standard ensures globally consistent safety and the highest possible food quality. The German (HDE), French (FCD), and Italian (ANCC, ANCD) retail federations participated in the creation of the IFS standards, in cooperation with manufacturers.

The bacterial fermentation process under laboratory conditions involves several steps
- Bacterial cultivation: Serratia marcescens is cultivated under controlled conditions that promote the production of serrapeptase.
- Fermentation: the bacteria are fermented under specific conditions that optimise enzyme production.
- Isolation and purification: after fermentation, the serrapeptase is isolated and purified to obtain a highly pure enzyme.
- We fill the Serrapeptase into branded Drcaps® vegetable capsules made of hypromellose, which only dissolve in the small intestine. This is a special branded capsule that passes through the stomach unchanged. Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme, isolated from a non-pathogenic bacterium (the enterobacterium Serracia E15). Higher concentrations of Serrapeptase in the capsule may cause digestive problems.
