If you are looking for coffee beans, chances are that you will come across the two most common types of coffee, which are Arabica and Robusta. What is the difference between them and which one should you choose?
Continue
Arabica
The Coffea arabica beans make one of the finest coffees available. It is characteristic for its subtle aroma and delicious taste. Growing this coffee is very demanding, both when it comes to external conditions and the level of care the plant requires. Unsurprisingly, the Arabica coffee is significantly more expensive compared to Robusta.
- Distinctive aroma
- Delicious flavour
- Lower caffeine content
Robusta
The Coffea canephora beans have an inferior quality compared to Arabica and typically have a somewhat bitter taste. They are less expensive to grow and mature faster, which is reflected in their lower price. Robusta also has a higher caffeine content, making it ideal for those who use coffee as an energy drink.
- Richer foam
- Stimulating effects thanks to high caffeine content
- Lower price
What’s the point of coffee blends?
Mixing these two types of coffee has three reasons:
- Creating foam (i.e. crema), which is something Robusta is more suitable for.
- Balancing flavours, often used with some more sour Arabica types.
- Price reduction while maintaining good flavour and rich aroma (for example 80% Arabica, 20% Robusta).
