Curcumin (turmeric, Curcuma longa) is used in traditional Chinese medicine mainly for its block-breaking ability and for its effects of removing damp heat from the body.
About curcumin
Curcumin itself is very poorly absorbed by the human body, so small amounts of pepper extract (piperine) and onion extract (quercetin) are added to curcumin to increase absorption by up to 2000%. Piperine and quercetin block an enzyme in the digestive system that would otherwise very quickly break down curcumin into a number of ineffective metabolites. In this way, undisturbed curcumin reaches the bloodstream and the cells themselves more quickly. Curcumin is a yellow dye extracted from the rhizome of turmeric (Curcuma longa). It is a lipophilic phenolic substance which, according to the literature, has effects on human health.
