Basic Czech I, a modern English-based textbook, is the first volume in the Basic Czech series. Methodologically, it is based on a communicative and comparative approach. Its aim is to introduce the basics of Czech grammar through the fluent and systematic acquisition of vocabulary and conversational phrases. Grammar, in close connection with vocabulary, is merely a means to this end. The intermediary language appears minimally and serves as concise explanatory notes, so the textbook can also be used for self-study. Clear tables and a series of witty dialogues allow the user to quickly memorize the material discussed. On the website www.cupress.cuni.cz you can download practical teacher's guides, dialogue recordings, exercise keys and other grammar and conversation materials to supplement the textbook. Basic Czech I corresponds to level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
